Australia’s Governing Body for Purebred Dogs
The Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) oversees the registration of purebred dogs in Australia and regulates dog sports and breeding standards in collaboration with state-based kennel clubs. Internationally recognised and established in 1958 as the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC), the organisation promotes responsible dog ownership; maintains the ORCHID* heritable canine diseases database; funds research into canine diseases; and supports state and territory-based member bodies.
The Australian National Kennel Council is now referred to Dogs Australia.
ANKC and Dog Sports in Australia
The ANKC supports a range of dog sports, including agility, obedience, and herding trials. These competitions help test and showcase a dog’s skills beyond conformation shows.
ANKC’s Efforts in Ethical Breeding
The ANKC enforces strict breeding guidelines to prevent genetic disorders and promote responsible ownership. It also maintains a database of registered breeders to ensure transparency.
