Champion Lines: Dog & Breeding Term Explained

What Are Champion Lines?

Champion lines refer to a pedigree that includes dogs who have won conformation titles in recognised kennel club events. These titles, often awarded by kennel clubs like Dogs Australia (formerly Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC)) or The American Kennel Club (AKC), indicate that the dog or its ancestors met the breed standard and excelled in competition. These dogs meet the highest breed standard requirements.

  • A Champion (CH) dog has earned enough points in conformation shows to be officially recognized as a champion.
  • A Grand Champion (GRCH) has won additional titles beyond the basic championship.
  • If a dog's pedigree includes multiple champions, it is referred to as having "champion bloodlines" or being from "champion lines."

Why Champion Lines Matter

Dogs from champion lines are often sought after for their superior genetics, structure, and temperament. However, it is essential to consider health, temparement and compatibility when selecting a breeding pair and/or breeder to work with.

How to Identify Champion Lineage

Pedigree documents highlight champion titles, typically marked as "CH" for champion and "GRCH" for grand champion. These titles indicate show success and adherence to breed standards.
