Liver Nose: Dog & Breeding Term Explained

Liver Nose: Dog & Breeding Term Explained

What is a Liver Nose in Dogs?

A liver nose refers to a nose colour that is brown instead of black. It is a genetic trait seen in breeds such as the Australian Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, and Dobermann. Black nosed dogs may also produce liver nose, if they carry a copy of the liver gene along with the dominant gene for black.

The Genetics Behind Liver Noses

A liver nose results from a recessive gene that prevents the production of black pigmentation. It is often associated with lighter eye colour and coat shades.

Does a Liver Nose Affect a Dog’s Health?

A liver nose is purely a cosmetic trait and does not impact a dog's health. However, dogs with lighter pigmentation may have increased sensitivity to sun exposure.
