Cubana Havanese is one of New Zealand’s first kennels to breed Havanese from top Australian, UK and European blood lines. We have been privileged to experience the pitter patter of tiny paws with 10 beautiful litters to date. Our first litter was Christmas day 2008. All our puppies are in loving homes in NZ, and as far away as Australia, Hawaii, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Spain, Singapore and Tonga. 14 are now NZ Champions and 2 are Australian Titled Champions. Once you have met a havanese you turn into this raving lunatic that 'Hav to hav a Hav!' Given that the havanese is a rare, minority breed in New Zealand, every effort is made to refine the breed by importing new, healthy, robust lines from UK and Germany. In 2012 we imported 2 beautiful red havanese, first of this color in the Southern Hemisphere from vom Salzetal, a top German breeder. Cubana is NOT a business but rather a ‘lifestyle’. Our happy, enchanting little charmers are our exceptionally beautiful, fun loving family members living with us unrestricted in our home. Meeting our first Havanese in the early 2000's - we were charmed by their temperaments, zest for life and their endless companionship. We were joined by our first Havanese "Lucy" - Ch. Carnwatch Alibrandi, and the story unfolded from there! With nearing 40 years experience in dogs, Anne has had success in numerous breeds from the powerful and loyal Rottweiler, down the charming and effervecent Havanese, and was joined by her daughter Sarah a few years later, with Havanese joining her in her own home shortly after, as her elder dogs passed on. Dogs have been our "family" for multiple generations. We are both trainee judges for the Toy group (Group 1), and Sarah has given back to the junior handling world as a judge in this area for several years. In present day, Anne & Sarah co-breed Havanese between them, and have a small team, much loved, who are as much their companions as show dogs. We focus on selective breeding that is qualitative for the betterment of the breed, as well as ethically and legally compliant practice. Beljala Kennels is a small kennel breeding for quality not quantity. Our mission is to produce happy, healthy Havanese. Our dogs have been fully profiled through DNA testing for diseases and traits common in Havanese. They have had their hips and elbows X-rayed, eyes screened by the Eye Clinic For Animals and patellas checked by our vet to ensure that we are breeding with healthy dogs. We have been involved in the dog world since 1979, with Beljala Kennels being established in 1980. Over the years we have successfully shown and bred Border Collies, Australian Kelpies, Schipperkes and now Havanese. Since becoming involved with Havanese we have campaigned many dogs to their Australian Champion, Grand Champion or Supreme Champion titles. Our home bred puppies entered the ring in 2018 and have already begun to make their mark. We were foundation members of the Varieties Of Bichon Related Breeds Club Of NSW Inc. Alanna is the current Secretary of the Club and has held this position for several years. Our Havanese are more than just show dogs. They are much loved members of our family. I am a small hobby breeder/exhibitor of Havanese dogs. I am not a Kennel, and all my dogs live in my home and are part of a loving and playful Havanese dog family. I love to play and socialize them from the minute they are born until they go to their forever homes. Havanese are known for their charisma, charm and sometimes silliness – often known as clown or circus dogs with their behavior. Havanese excel at therapy, obedience and agility and more importantly make the most loving companion. Often known as the Havanese Silk Dog or Rainbow dog your Havanese will need daily maintenance to keep his coat long and silky and he may change colour as he grows. All my puppies are ANKC registered and come with health guarantees. The whole litter is constantly under evaluation as they grow for temperament, conformation and health. Around 7 weeks of age puppies are temperament tested and evaluated for conformation using the ANKC Breed Standard for the Havanese here in Australia. Please keep in mind that the Havanese is not the breed for everyone so please ask as many questions you can of your breeder. There are no perfect dogs, and ALL dogs have faults. My ultimate goal is to produce puppies that closely adhere to the ANKC Havanese Breed Standard therefore ensuring that they all will be a wonderful representation of the breed. By 7 to 8 weeks, I am better able to offer you a description of each puppy’s temperament and personality so I can assist you in finding the perfect match.
